In the 1850s, a German-Australian physician and botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller discovered the macadamia nut and decided to name it after a colleague of his. The name of said companion was John Macadam. Von Mueller was a notable chemist and physician who encouraged the cultivation of the macadamia nut.
It is a nut of the arboreal plant genus and belongs to the family, Proteaceae. These are mainly found in Australia, and are increasingly seen in Indonesia and New Caledonia.
